Preparing Your Packing List

Calculators for building a complete packing list and adapting it to carry-on, camping, or destination-specific trips.

Packing usually starts with a general list, then narrows based on how you're actually traveling — carry-on only, a campsite, or a typical hotel-based vacation. Work through the steps below, using only the ones that apply to your trip.

How This Works

  1. Build Your Complete Packing List

Start with a general list covering the categories most trips need — clothing, toiletries, electronics, and documents. The Packing List Generator builds this based on your trip type, climate, and traveler type. Ultimate Packing Checklist covers the reasoning behind these categories in more depth. If your trip is a typical hotel-based vacation, this list may be all you need — otherwise, adapt it in the next steps.

  2. Adapt It For Your Destination

For a destination-driven vacation, the Vacation Packing List refines the general list around your specific destination type and climate — beach, city, mountains, or resort — which shapes clothing and essentials more precisely than the general list alone. Skip this step if your trip is carry-on-only or camping-focused, since those have their own dedicated steps below.

  3. Optimize For Carry-On Only, If Applicable

If you're traveling without checked luggage, the Carry-On Packing List scopes your list to what fits in a carry-on bag and complies with typical liquid restrictions, prioritizing versatile, space-efficient items over the fuller general list. Not every trip needs this step — use it only if carry-on-only is actually your plan.

  4. Handle Specialized Trips Like Camping

Camping adds gear a hotel-based list doesn't cover at all — shelter, sleeping system, and cooking equipment. The Camping Packing List generates this based on your camping type and climate. This step, like the others above, only applies if it matches your actual trip — most travelers will use one or two of these four calculators, not all four.

FAQ

Do I need to use every calculator in this collection?

No. Most trips only need one or two of the four — the general Packing List Generator plus whichever of Vacation, Carry-On, or Camping actually matches your trip. Use the general list on its own for a straightforward trip that doesn't fit any of the specialized cases.

Can I use more than one of the specialized lists for the same trip?

Yes, if your trip genuinely combines them — a carry-on-only camping trip, for example. Each calculator focuses on its own scope, so combining results from more than one is reasonable when your trip doesn't fit neatly into a single category.

Does this collection cover what documents I need for an international trip?

No. This collection covers what to physically pack. Passport, visa, and other entry documentation are covered separately — see the Planning an International Trip collection or the Country Entry Requirements & Documentation guide for that side of trip preparation.
