Data Sources

TravelToolsHQ's location, airport, and train station search uses open datasets bundled directly into the site. This page credits each source and links to its license.

Cities And Places

City and place search (used across Trip Planning calculators) is built from GeoNames, covering populated places with 15,000 or more residents worldwide. This work contains information from GeoNames, made available under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. Coordinates are rounded and labels are regenerated from GeoNames' raw export for display; no other changes are made to the underlying place data.

Airports

Airport search is built from OurAirports, limited to large and medium airports with an IATA code. OurAirports data is released to the public domain, so attribution isn't required — it's credited here for transparency.

Train Stations

Train station search is built from Wikidata, limited to stations notable enough to be documented in at least 8 languages, as a proxy for major stations. Wikidata data is released under a CC0 Public Domain Dedication, so attribution isn't required — it's credited here for transparency. Coverage is real but uneven: it reflects how thoroughly a station has been documented on Wikipedia, not necessarily how significant it is, so some regions (particularly Japan and parts of Europe) are represented in much greater depth than others.

How These Are Used

All three datasets are bundled as static files and searched entirely in your browser — TravelToolsHQdoes not send your searches to GeoNames, OurAirports, Wikidata, or any other third party. See each calculator's own content for how its dataset is applied and any coverage limitations specific to that tool.
