Road Trip Planner
Calculators for drive time, fuel cost, full driving cost, and total road trip budget.
Once you know your route and distance, a road trip's cost and timing come down to a handful of inputs: how long the drive will take, how much fuel it'll use, what the drive costs in full, and what the whole trip adds up to. Work through the steps below in order, using only the ones that apply to your trip. If you haven't settled on a route or distance yet, see the Planning Your Route collection first.
How This Works
Estimate Your Driving Time
Start with how long the drive itself will take. The Travel Time Calculator estimates total driving time from your distance and average speed, including rest breaks — useful for deciding how many days the drive will take and how to split up overnight stops. If you don't yet know your route's distance, get that first from the Planning Your Route collection.
Estimate Fuel Cost
With your distance in hand, the Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel the trip will use based on distance and your vehicle's efficiency — the starting point for the trip's driving cost.
Estimate Your Full Driving Cost
Fuel is usually the largest driving cost, but not the only one. The Driving Cost Calculator adds tolls, parking, and vehicle wear and tear to fuel for a fuller picture of what the drive itself costs, beyond just fuel.
Build Your Total Road Trip Budget
Finish by folding driving costs together with everything else the trip involves. The Road Trip Budget Calculator combines fuel, lodging, food, tolls, parking, activities, and miscellaneous spending into one total — the complete picture of what the trip will cost, not just the drive.

FAQ
Do I need to use every calculator in this collection?
No. Use whichever steps apply — if you only need a quick fuel estimate, Fuel Cost Calculator on its own is enough. Road Trip Budget Calculator is the only one that needs the others' numbers folded in for a complete total.
What's the difference between Fuel Cost and Driving Cost?
Fuel Cost Calculator estimates just the fuel for a trip based on distance, fuel efficiency, and price per unit. Driving Cost Calculator is broader and adds tolls, parking, and vehicle wear and tear on top of fuel.
Does this collection cover distance and route planning?
No. Confirming your route and distance — including multi-stop trips — is covered separately in the Planning Your Route collection. This collection starts once you know your distance and covers time and cost from there.
